Medical Lycra is a specialised, elastic fabric used in compression garments to support both children and adults with neurological, musculoskeletal, or postural conditions. Designed for dynamic movement, it provides proprioceptive feedback, enhances body awareness, and improves stability. Commonly prescribed for cerebral palsy, hypermobility, and sensory processing disorders, medical Lycra garments help reduce involuntary movements and promote better posture.
Custom-made suits, leggings, and vests offer targeted compression, aiding in muscle control and reducing fatigue. Breathable and durable, this fabric allows for extended wear without discomfort. Medical Lycra plays a crucial role in therapy, improving function and quality of life for many patients. Lycra orthotics are easily concealed orthotic devices that can be worn underneath your clothes. Lycra assists with:
- Relieving pain
- Combating high tone
- Preventing contracture
- Reducing unwanted movements eg ataxia
- Increasing your awareness of your body in space
- Improving your posture and core stability
- Rehabilitating and preventing sports injuries
Process
The first step is to organise an assessment with one of our experienced orthotists. The orthotist will carry out an examination including medical history, muscle power, gait analysis and range of movement tests to establish if you are suitable for a Lycra garment. A series of measurements can then be taken. It is important that we can achieve a perfect fit so the large majority of our lycra orthoses are bespoke. There are some cost effective ‘off the shelf’ Lycra garments which will be recommended if appropriate.
The measurements will then be sent to one of our manufacturing partners and we will arrange an appointment for you to return for a fitting. At this appointment we will check the fit and make sure that everything is perfect for you before you take the garment away. After this we will arrange regular reviews to ensure that you are making the most out of the Lycra.
