What is the process to receive an ankle brace?

The process to receive an ankle and foot orthotics would be:

  • Assessment
  • Measuring / Casting
  • Fitting
  • Review

To establish the type of ankle brace you require your orthotist will need to complete an assessment of your ankle joint. This will involve observing you walk, measuring your range of movement and discussing your goals. Using the information gathered your orthotist will be able to recommend the correct type of ankle brace.

If it is felt that a custom ankle brace will be most beneficial, your orthotist will need to take a cast of your ankle, foot and calf. Using this cast your bespoke ankle brace will be constructed. Your orthotist will discuss the different materials, supporting reinforcement structures as well as the fastening methods with you to ensure you are comfortable with the brace to be made. Once constructed you will be required to return for a fitting, your orthotist will confirm the brace fits correctly and if required adjustments can be made.
