What are the different types of Turbomed?

Xtern Classic - The Xtern Classic was the first generation of Turbomed. This device continues to be a very effective device which has transformed the lives of many users.

Xtern Summit - The Xtern summit is less bulky than the Xtern Classic turbomed. It has been proven to be

  • 25% lighter
  • 18% more assistive into dorsi-flexion (picking foot up)
  • 35% more media-lateral strength (side to side)

The Xtern Summit is manufactured with the highest quality materials such as carbon fibre.

Xtern Frontier - The rear stem support of the Xtern classic and Xtern Summit can make sliding the foot into the shoe challenging. The Xtern frontier has been designed to allow for ease of fitting. It has a frontal approach so this leaves the back of the shoe completely unrestricted so the foot can slide in the shoe as normal.

There is also a more convenient magnetic calf strap system. This is especially helpful for individuals with reduced dexterity or mobility of the hands, such as stroke patients.

What is the process to receive a TurboMed ?

The process to receive a TurboMed would be:

  • Assessment / Trial (with measurements)
  • Fitting
  • Review

Assessment

The first thing to do is to contact us to arrange an assessment. The assessment will give the orthotist the opportunity to carry out some clinical tests to ensure you are suitable for the Turbomed.

Once the orthotist has established that the TurboMed is appropriate for you the orthtoist will conduct a turbomed trial. This is done using a trial kit which is adjustable for most footwear. Please bring running type trainers and/or walking boots/ shoes on the day of your assessment. If you are unsure about footwear, please contact us for more information prior to attending your assessment as compatible footwear is crucial to providing an effective trial.

Following a successful trial the orthotist will take specific measurements and discuss with you which Turbomed is the most suitable for you. The measurements will be sent away and your very own Turbomed will be manufactured. This can take 5 - 10 working days depending on manufacturing capacity.

Fitting

We recommend a fitting appointment so the orthotist can check the device is functioning correctly. The orthotist will also show you how best to fit the clips onto your own footwear and provide wear and care advice.

Review

We provide a complimentary review which can be used by the patient at any time. This is normally to review the improvements in gait pattern after a period of time wearing the device.
